Notes on this piece This work was composed in 2010 and it was premiere in ACL festival in Japan. Regarded as one of Tang Xianzu’s “Four Dreams”, “The Peony Pavilion” is a famous Chinese ancient drama written in the Ming Dynasty and was a very popular play in the Ming Dynasty.I have the intention to set several impressive lyrics into the music. The music tries to evoke the mood of ancient love story in which the drama delineates.Several contemporary technique are used, such as nonsense vowels singing and humming, relative pitch notation and Chinese Kunqu Operatic singing style of the vocalists, in order to evoke an atmosphere mixed with the old and new.
