Notes sur cette pièce
Otohime [乙姫] (2018) – for flute, oboe, french horn, trumpet, violin, viola and double bass – is inspired by the Japanese mythology. Otohime is the daughter of Ryūjin, god of the sea, she is the dragon princess of the sea and the aquatic world.
The work represents the different states of the sea and the goddess who embodies it at the same time. Several sections are connected, sometimes overlapping, and they walk the listener between a calm and mysterious sea to an increasingly chaotic one.
The first eolian sounds recall the delicate crackling of foam in the morning, little by little the sea awakens, the stamps become denser and the sound material gradually swells to become saturated; first agitation of the waters.
The tension goes down, the weather seems to stretch and the sea becomes calm again. Suddenly, an imperceptibly tingling is perceived, then there are more and more intense agitated waves, and each instrument gently slipping away virtuosic rhythms, time freezes and then wait again.
The double bass, like a voice from the depths of the ocean, plays an important role in the work because it gives the great fundamentals, serious and immutable pillar despite the movement of the waves. Gradually unrest grows, the material swells again, gains in grain and density; chaos begins and the sea is unleashed.
The final part of the piece is a great fortissimo alternating between controlled and uncontrolled chaos materials (leaving a part of freedom to the performers to reinforce it) that brings the listener, wave after wave, into the heart of the storm.
