Desnudo

Desnudo is an exploration of the saxophone. The piece deviates from the traditional approach and any conventional way of playing the instrument and tries to find a new — certainly unexpected — poetic expression. In this piece, the instrument is somewhat “naked” — as the title implies. Denuded of all its tradition, stripped of the mouthpiece and for much of the piece of the breath itself. What remains is the naked sound of the instrument, the noise of the mechanism and other parasitic sounds that are the essence of the instrument's manufacture. In this way the saxophone becomes a percussion instrument. The piece was written for alto saxophone, but it could be played (if adapted) on any saxophone except the soprano and sopranino. Because of the nature of the sounds employed (which are of low volume) it is advisable that it be performed on an intimate environment (e.g. a very small hall) or that adequate amplification be used.
