Notes sur cette pièce I played this duo for bass flute and steel drum into the computer one morning. I used a melody that I had written on music paper the evening before - with rough information about lengths and shortenings. I improvised or paraphrased this melody on the computer and then edited it again after the computer recording, especially in such a way that the monophonic line of which the piece exclusively consists appears to be “harmonious” in an ambiguous way through the “hoqueting” of the two instruments bass flute and steel drum. The computer faithfully recorded the smallest subtleties of rhythm. I then chose a much coarser playback grid because the agogic fine rhythm that was actually played seemed “illegible”. I also edited the pitches (although rarely), but the overall flow of the quasi-improvisation remained intact. What was important to me was to draw the harmonic processes more clearly. I like to switch back and forth between different "tonal" centers in my consciousness while playing. I look for ambiguity so that the listener (which I am when I play) can imagine entire passages oscillating between "G minor" and "F sharp minor" at the same time. However, our concepts from tonal language do not really apply to my music. In my "minor", ancient Greek scales also resonate, as well as non-European ones, and abstruse, self-invented ones.
