This piece explores two contrasting ideas related to travel, speed, and movement. The first concept stems from the personal sensation that the faster a train travels, the safer and more comfortable I feel, creating a paradoxical sense of floating within a static object amidst a moving environment. I tried to recreate this sensation in the music by playing with contrasting rhythms and timbral textures between the soloist and the ensemble.
The second idea aims to capture the varied perceptions of speed experienced during a train or car journey. When looking far into the distance out the window, it feels like the train is going slower, but when focusing on things closer by, it feels faster, resulting in the perception of a “polyphony of speed and movements”.
I endeavored to musically illustrate the diverse textures visible when observing the fleeting colors and shapes outside the window of a fast-moving train. These constantly shifting landscapes blend textures, lines, lights and shapes in captivating ways, similar to an evolving painting.
