“it’s no accident they call it The Present” is one of the forms in which my (lockdown-induced) obsession with temporality has manifested itself.
Being by nature an anxious and neurotic person, thinking about the future has always been for me a source of great psychological distress, and the solution that is always proposed - from the therapist to the yogi - is to “focus only on the present”. Being grounded in the present, without stretching your mind to the past or the future: only the present.
Being able to stop checking on your future is, in fact, a privilege reserved for those who have the absolute certainty of having a future. But when the present really becomes the only thing you have, a point without dimensions, this present is no longer a gift, but a conviction.
It has been pointed out to me that the phrase used as the title – in my original intention borrowed from «Infinite Jest» by David Foster Wallace – is also pronounced almost word for word in the DreamWorks animated film «Kung Fu Panda» by a wise old turtle. This wonderful coincidence also sums up, in fact, the character of this music, which I hope contains a bit of both worlds.
