The title for this piece is derived from the names of the Cheyenne-Arapaho multidisciplinary artist Hock E Aye VI Edgar Heap of Birds and the Jamaican politician Marcus Garvey. Both of these figures fought for civil rights and
justice by exposing the extreme violence perpetrated against their communities by white colonizers. Upon explicitly illuminating the racial violence against their heritage and leading calls of resistance, both figures’ accomplishments faced ridicule and were downplayed by the establishments that they struggled against.
The attempts made by dominant media sources and society at large to delegitimize the actions and resistance efforts of similar activists are stronger than ever in this day and age. True efforts to strike back at these overarching
systems of control constantly face backlash by predominantly white voices of authority in order to break solidarity among the support base. This is a piece that was inspired by art and action being brushed off by larger controlling
forces and by deeper, more contentious protests getting whitewashed by the media or government. It is a protest piece that has been wrapped in a digestible package, in the same way that many who struggle have to gently spoon feed their politics in order to even engage in a conversation. It is about acknowledging privilege and finding ways to bridge solidarity in any way possible.
