The first exposition of the chromatic theme of the title, in the starting canon, is by the Bb clarinet, 'pianissimo' and 'adagio'. Few little variations with some sinuous glissando, lead to an 'accelerando'. The canon now changes in a tense dialog between flute and clarinet. One more 'canone stretto' with variations, and a sudden 'frullato' canon appears, leading to a very high, sharp and 'fortissimo' sounding section that finally ends with an exhausted, low and 'pianissimo', new exposition of the main theme.
