When a human being is reaching the end of his or her life, the most valuable thing he or she can possess is his or her memories. Each person has his or her own history written during all his or her life. However, and unfortunately, there are people that are not able to remember anything of his or her life due to a disease.
This work, called “Memories II” is the second piece from a series of pieces dedicated to the memory. Specifically, those pieces are dedicated to these people that are unable to remember their good or bad times in their life.
In this work, I propose a metaphor of the memory of a human being and its gradual degeneration due to illnesses as Alzheimer or senility. Let’s not forget that the memory is an essential part of music in all its aspects.
I also propose a challenge to the audience. I set this metaphor in musical aspects as the structure, the harmony and, above all, the sonorous objects (musical material). These ones undergo an explicit degeneration in the last minutes of the piece, remaining them in the most primary form.
The piece was premiered by Lorelei Dowling (bassoon) and Christian Dierstein (percussion) in Madrid (Spain).
