Notes sur cette pièce Cirkuszoid (Circusoyd) was composed in 2007 originally for percussion solo, tenor recorder, Hungarian cimbalom and accordion. Two years later a new version was made for percussion solo, tenor recorder, viola and piano.
The word „circus” in Hungarian makes people think of the Circus as an institution where artists, animals and clowns work. The original meaning (circus shape) is only a secondary meaning. This ambiguity was the main idea of my piece. The group of recorder, accordion and Hungarian cimbalom behaves as an orchestra in the circus while the percussionist is the protagonist. He/she packs special instruments into and out of a box and tries their sound curiously. At certain points of the piece the material of the two groups meet but they mostly speak with paying no attention to each other. On the other hand the form of the piece is circular. At the end of the piece it can be played from the beginning again as if there were no end of the piece. The piece can be finished anywhere.
World premier: April 26, 2008 – Műcsarnok, Budapest. Ensemble UMZE (soloist: Aurél Holló)
