Notes sur cette pièce "Exquise esquisse saxophonique/Èlectrique" has been written as a sketch (esquisse) for my bigger piece for baritone saxophone and computer for the IRCAM course. It is dedicated to Thomas Gobert who premiered the piece.
One of the main ideas was to generate most of the electronic in real time using snippets of the live saxophone part. So the result is a constantly renewed remix in real time. Whilst the saxophonist feeds the computer memory with variations on two basic loop-like ideas, the computer arranges and superimposes bits of the sax input following a precisly pre-composed plan. Thus, always new combinations of the live part are presented in a rhythmically rather precise manner. Sometimes it is not clear anymore what is live and what is playback. In ÑExquise esquisseì I explored the saxophone for the first time using certain soft two note multiphonics, beath noise, slaps, overtones, the big dynamic range, extreme heights, typical jazz sax notes - all this is used for this study that develops from noisy to pitched sounds.
