Kaleidoscope is composed, essentially, of a limited amount of material. This material was originally conceived with a melodic, talkative and gestural character. Its mixing and overlay in varying ways throughout the piece create a kaleidoscopic effect, in which the original gestural character is periodically blurred and obscured; the listener’s perception then alternates between that of clear and discreet musical discourse to that of texture. The variation in texture is further achieved via the different instrumental combinations and various types of articulation used throughout the piece.
Several instruments are used:
Player 1: Soprano in 440Hz, Sopranino, Soprano in 415Hz
Player 2: Sopranino, Soprano in 440Hz detuned approx. a quarter-tone lower
