The family of newly developed "Bohlen-Pierce" instruments uses the division of an octave plus a fifth into 13 equal steps, size 146 cents.

Ákos Hoffmann and Nora-Louise Müller have been playing the BP clarinet for many years. I wrote this duo for them in 2007, using the possibilities of an approximate natural tuning in 1-3-5-7-9, which is laid out in the BP scale.

St. Kilda is a Scottish island that is mainly home to birds. As long as there were people there, they lived in symbiosis with the birds of the island, hence the title "The Bird People..."
