Notes sur cette pièce
This short work was written for the Avanti ! Chamber Orchestra and was partly inspired by Akseli Gallen-Kallela's painting The Defense of the Sampo, from the Finnish national epic Kalevala. The title "Migratio II" refers to a former eponym work in which some of the ideas in the present piece were first handled. "Migratio", because it stands for an itinerary from a musical situation to another. One may also guess some autobiographical understatements. For me, the Sampo first refers to an indecision (nobody exactly knows what it is), then a movement (passing from one character to another in the Kalevala). Towards the end, the opposition between two groups of strings can be heard as the struggle between Väinämöinen and the sorceress Louhi for the sacred Sampo. As the legend (or epic) says, the Sampo is eventually destroyed, lost in the waters.
