Escher Without Wings

Escher Without Wings is based on the transformation in Maurits Cornelis Escher’s print Sky and Water I. The work –as with Escher– combines two items, a fish and a bird. These two items were drawn separately on two architectural papers, then superimposed on each other to provide representation of the composition’s general form, which was thus used aesthetically to map out certain musical events and guide the composer through the composition process. Escher Without Wings is also based on the idea of gradual transformation; graphically shaping an unorganized score into a graphic organisation. The graphic transformation procedure is triggered at each part letter A, B and C. The transformation consists of six divided instrument blocks, moved slightly away from their initial position to reach their final goal, forming the name Escher.
