Whismsical Spheres

?Virtuosity could be used to characterize an individual whose technical accomplishments would astonish virtually all listeners. In the times of Niccolo Paganini, perhaps the main challenges had to do with how fast and how clearly a virtuoso could play a difficult passage. In 2007, after much water has passed under the bridge, the story can be rather different. Whimsical Spheres explores the virtuosity of violin playing not in terms of fireworks or exhibitionism but in a way which is inherent to the composition itself: exquisite and refined bow control and the different timbres produced by it thus become the main elements of the piece.

This piece was dedicated to violinist Mary Hofman, in deep gratitude for her marvelous playing and curiosity to explore.
