Notes sur cette pièce In 2007 I was commissioned to write a piece for the now disbanded Tel-Aviv Saxophone Quartet. I was obviously excited about this opportunity as it meant not only an assured performance, but that I was also finally to come to terms with writing for one of my least favorite instruments. Hence Ambiance is indeed an exploration of the extended sound world in which the Saxophone dwells. The two most evident features of the composition are: the tutti (all saxophones playing constantly together), and avoiding almost completely the use of pitched material. I obtained the latter by either straightforward notation, or with the use of live electronics that change, react or add to the initial input from the Saxophones performing on stage. My use of approximate notation in highly dense and rhythmical settings further allows for an erratic sound-quality when performed, which not only helps alter the Saxophone output, but also obliterates the clean, well phrased and ‘well behaved’ performance; yet another pet-love of mine. Interestingly enough, this series of self-imposed handicaps lead to the birth of what I believe to be one of my most successful compositions.
