Notes on this piece Ilusionario is a commission by the Ensemble Squillante and had its première at the Théâtre Le Phénix (France, Scène Nationale). In Ilusionario I continued experimenting with instrumental spatialization. The nine saxophones play onstage throughout the first and longest section (Pipe Dream). Suddenly lights are turned completely off and the second and last section (Le Marchand d’Étoiles) starts. At this point, the musicians cease to be stationary and start walking forming a big ring around the audience. Throughout this second section the theatre remains completely in the dark and the metronomics marks vanishes. The musicians play by heart synchronizing with one another only by listening. The piece is full of illusory and artful devices.
