An ant mill is a side effect of the self-organizing structure of ant colonies: ants are blind, and they move around following the pheromone track left by the one in front of them.
This system works fine until, for whatever reason (a rain drop, a leaf, a strong breeze...) one ant starts deviating from a straight line. This deviation will establish a circular path, that will be followed by all the other ants, creating a mill.
Ants are unaware of their pointless behavior, and they will keep rotating and spiraling until they will eventually die of exhaustion.
They always tried to sell us the idea that to die following a cause, an ideal, or a leader, was a good way to go, honourable and worth remembering. But when we are not aware that we are blindly following someone or something, nothing redeems our disappearance.
The shocking phenomenon of the ant mill was a mirror in which I saw all of us: perpetually in motion, along a path set by someone else and from which we cannot deviate, heading towards an unknown end that we cannot even imagine.
