Ptitschki is a transliteration of Russian “bird”. My former Finnish student Matti Pakkanen is a bird lover and gave me a lot of ideas about bird sounds. He himself wrote “Parlando” for the wonderful Russian saxophonist Asya Fateyeva, see Youtube. My “Ptitschki” doesn’t go back to bird sounds. My “birds” begin improvising, like young birds. Some other "birds" come from IRCAM in Paris and distort spectra. Others come from a semi-Hamburg world of polymetric structures. In some cases, 16 “birds” are layered on top of each other, each whistling their own note at a different tempo.
