“a rear window” springs from a conversation I had with Gerardo Gandini about the concept of windows in his music, resembling the notion in Renaissance and Baroque paintings. That day I had heard his Cello Sonata dedicated to and performed by Martín Devoto, with “windows” to other music.
I commented to him that, coincidentally, I had a commission from Martín Devoto and the clarinetist Eduardo Spinelli and that after listening to his piece I decided to introduce “windows” to his Cello Sonata in my work, since we shared a player, but that those “windows” would appear on the bass clarinet instead, making certain distortions (harmonic intervals of fifths - in his Cello Sonata - transformed into multiphonics that made the 3rd harmonic appear, for example).
“a rear window” is a set of relatively brief fragments separated by long silences in which the sounds submerge and from which they emerge again and again.
The work was premiered on November 14, 2009 by Martín Devoto on cello and Eduardo Spinelli on bass clarinet at the VII FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE MÚSICA CONTEMPORÁNEA CÓRDOBA 2009.
