Repetition is a pattern of events that not only regulates the cycle of nature, but also human life, from its largest segments to the smallest details. Science is based on repetition, physical and mental development is based on repetition, as are social and emotional relationships, and even our own daily survival. Each repetition is aimed at achieving a goal, and it is probably for this reason that we can bear it.
People suffering from certain diseases, however, show cases of "useless" repetitive behaviour: minimal gestures performed infinitely, verbal stereotypes that pervade communication, behavioural patterns that recur for no apparent reason.
In reality we are not allowed to define these repetitions as "useless": their objective is not obvious for us, but it is very clear for the person in action. Repetition is often used as a form of comfort (for example in some cases of addiction) because it creates the illusion of being able to suspend time, thus neutralizing the possibility of change, of the unknown future.
In reality we know well that we cannot live the same situation twice in the same way: after the first time, something changes in us, we have memory, experience, expectations. Repeating therefore makes repetition impossible, but we must continue to try.
