"Variaciones sobre un púrpura profundo" is based on the well-known guitar riff of the Deep Purple's song Smoke on the water. Although I use the word variations in the title, I do not use this composition technique in the work. It is not a theme and variations, actually is a deconstruction of the history of the song. The song tells the story of the accident in a Frank Zappa's concert that caused an enormous fire that covered up the surface of the Leman Lake in Switzerland with smoke. This event inspired Ritchie Blackmore to create the riff immediately. Inspired by this story, I take the idea of action-reaction (in some way connected to the traditional idea of inspiration) in order to create the piece. The interconnection of the instruments is the main point of the piece. The instruments react to stimulus created by the other ones and take their own path. The riff is the element that organize the piece, although, sometimes, it has been deformed and could be unrecognizable.
The piece was premiered by Nou ensemble in Pamplona (Spain)
