Notes on this piece Alhures was specially written for the Tsilumos Ensemble and is a Portuguese word that translates as in another place, elsewhere. As part of the work’s poetic, this composition demands a different type of virtuosity towards performance, one that constantly strives to harmonize and merge the four different instruments. While performing this work, the players are encouraged ‘to abstain from their egos’. The quartet’s heterogeneous formation lead to the main concept of the work: to interpret all instruments as divergent and yet dependent organs of a same meta-instrument, with its own organic aspects, such as attack, resonance, and color.
