Notes on this piece Materials posses the mechanical property of resilience, defined as the capacity to elastically absorb energy. For example, if we apply a load to a spring, a certain amount of energy is absorbed and stored. When we remove the load, the stored energy is released. The maximum amount of energy a material can absorb and store without permanent deformation is called “proof resilience.” This defines the ability of a material to support vibrations and shocks. The image of a material and its proof resilience builds a context for this piece, but is not its starting point. Instead, this image is the confluence of several compositional necessities: the experience of the elasticity of the sound space, its potential for stretching, its change of density, and its contours. The sound space is not intended as a container of musical events, but is in itself the musical event, with a proper amount of internal energy. The individual instruments build the proof resilience of this metamorphic space.
