Notes on this piece The piece "Friction" borrows its notion from both the physical and metaphysical meanings of the word. In the world of physics, friction could mean the rubbing of one body (or object) against another or the force of resistance encountered when one body is moved in contact with another. Although sometimes considered a negative energy, a lot of things actually would not happen if friction did not exist in the real world. A more abstract understanding of the word "friction" often brings to mind a state of conflict between people or ideologies that results from one's differences. But it has to be remarked that tension is not the only by-product of any sort of conflict. Conflicts could also add positive aspects to the situation or shed new light just like friction in physics can be turned into useful applications. In this piece, the flute and viola duo embody the physical phenomenon of friction, and together they take us through the emotional journey of experiencing the different stages of coping with differences and conflicts.
