Notes on this piece
Ser diferente is the third of my trios for different sets of instruments, composed in 2008. It was commissioned by Trio Matiegka and premiered and recorded by them in 2010.
The trio is a chant to diversity. The coexistence and interaction among what it is heterogeneous, unalike. Flute, viola and guitar could not be more different among them. The flute belongs to woodwinds, the viola to bowed strings and the guitar to plucked strings.
The unknown, the different, the other..... Its difference questions and threatens. The risk scares and makes us to accept our own vulnerability. We hide, we adapt, we believe we are open. We create a silence -rough but appropriate- that lock us to our own diversity: my feminine-masculine aspect; my alter egos, my contradictions; my dark side; the other otherness. Diversity lives in ourselves.
In a structure where the trio components share the same level of importance and within a discourse mainly polyphonic, a melody - introduced by the flute at the beginning of the piece- shines, de-composing and re-composing itself constantly, until reunite, at the end, those three "others" in a solo chant together.
