The end of the illusion: an epitaph to jean baudrillard is a micro requiem, paying tribute to the influence of the great French thinker following his death in 2007. I had written an orchestral work in 2003 that borrowed its title from his 1992 book the illusion of the end. This new, inverted title work was conceived as a cascade that broadens out at its centre to evolve into a dark heraldic fanfare, only to complete its collapse into the low registers of the instrument. The fanfare returns momentarily as a brief coda before a final sustained dramatic nest, that strips its harmony back note by note, leaving only an echo carillon hanging in the air. This is the second work I have written for this actual organ at the Melbourne Town Hall. With its valves and piping and extraordinary registers, it really is the pulsing mechanical heart of Melbourne.
My thanks to Ariel Valent at City of Melbourne for the commission, Jennifer Chou for a terrific development and rehearsal process, splintered as it was over many months between September 2008 and June 2009, and to my usual suspects, Matthew, Zosia and Jean-Louis.
