Self portrait with holes in the head is a piece inspired by the eponymous painting by Les Harris. The piece was originally written for Joseph Ehrenpreis for Brahms guitar. One of the interesting challenges of this collaboration was to pick a painting from the Amaranthine Museum. My attention was immediately caught by the piece Self portrait with holes in the head. In that painting I found a structure similar to the kind of structures I use in my compositions. I was attracted by the notion of holes that can be translated as silences in music.
The form of the piece follows the structure of the painting and explores a soundworld made of three different categories of sounds that evolve and interact during the piece.
This version for 6-string guitar is warmly dedicated to Noppakorn Auesirinucroch.
