This work, written for horn and piano, consists in 9 small pieces, each with a particular character. It is a free evocation of different rivers (or streams), some agitated others calmer. Throughout the work there is a dialogue based on the flow and resonance between the two instruments.
This work is freely inspired from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata BWV 1027 for viola da gamba and harpsichord. It adopts an arched shape, each piece answering in mirror according to the following plan:
- I: inspired by the 1st mvt of the Sonata ("Adagio")
- II: inspired by the 2nd mvt of the Sonata ("Allegro ma non tanto")
- III: inspired by the 3rd mvt of the Sonata ("Andante")
- IV: inspired by the 4th mvt of the Sonata ("Allegro moderato")
- V: free movement, almost improvised recitative
- VI: inspired by the 4th mvt of the Sonata ("Allegro moderato")
- VII: inspired by the 3rd mvt of the Sonata ("Andante")
- VIII: inspired by the 2nd mvt of the Sonata ("Allegro ma non tanto")
- IX: inspired by the 1st mvt of the Sonata ("Adagio")
This piece was commissioned by Yudai Shoji, who is the dedicatee.
