Notes sur cette pièce “geliehene Aussicht” (borrowed view) is the approximate translation of the Japanese term “Shakkei” which means the inclusion of structure and character of the preexisting surroundings into the composition of a traditional Japanese garden. The views from a Japanese garden on the surroundings appear naturalistic, as if by accident, but they are carefully constructed. There are three parts of this piece: the garden, a near surrounding, and a more distant surrounding. It can be performed in three versions: “Mit geliehener Aussicht” for piano solo, “Mit geliehener Aussicht – Umgebung [surrounding] 1“ for piano and clarinet, violoncello and percussion, “Mit geliehener Aussicht – Umgebung 1+2“ for piano and clarinet, violoncello, percussion and six other instruments. The version for piano solo is like a garden with free views on imaginary surroundings that can not be seen or heard. (Peter Gahn)
